Hi there,
you might try to use a font like "Symbol" (that's what it's called on the
Mac) which has most of its letters being either some small part of a brace
or greek letters. It might work with
FontForm[a, {"Symbol", FONTSIZE}]
I don't know aubout mixing different fonts though.
