Concerning student versions of Mma: I bought the student
version for Windows in early 1994. I paid $175 US, and instead
of using a coprocessor, it emulates one via the sourcecode.
However, since that time, the latest student version for Windows
DOES use the coprocessor, and is probably just as good as the full
version. It now sells for $109 US, and this is the educational
price, and you need to be a student to buy it. If you have the
older version, as I do, you can upgrade for $50 US. This leads me
to a final note: I think what you will get for $109 US is a full
version of Mma, but probably not a full customer support package,
such as no free upgrades, etc. Also, more schools are using Mma
as a classroom tool, so it makes sense to make it affordable to
a large number of students. And it's a good package! I hope this
helps somebody.
