Live subscripts

There have been a few posts lamenting the lack of "live" subscripts that could be used as in tensor notation. I found that something like: f[sub]m_:=m^2+1 acted as expected when put into summations and formulas with m as an index, while f[sub]m:=m^2+1 just sat there and didn't return anything.
