Brackets and Braces

It may be a silly question, and I know there are less elegant
workarounds, but: How do I get my brackets to work in Mathematica
Notebooks?

After years dealing with the old user interface, I consider to start
using the Notebook version under Solaris 2.5 (on a Sun SparcStation20).
Is it possible to enter and edit a keymap? With all the brackets in
Mathematica programming, it is not a good solution to use ASCII-codes.

Do any of you have some suggestions?
