AxesLabel puts "Null" on graph axis!

I used
Plot3D[function, {range1}, {range2}, AxesLabel-> {"x", "y", "z"}]
and on the graph axes I get (no quotes) "x Null", "y Null" and "z
Null". I spent some time in the help section but so far I've got no
clue as to why these "Null" words are added.
Any help appreciated (It's tiresome using white out all the time!).
