Memory saving mode of mathematica front end?

When running the mathematica front end on monochrome X-terminals, we
sometimes observe a shortage of local memory, which might be due to the
use of color. Is it possible to select a special memory saving mode
("mono"), when starting the mathematica front end?

Peter Schilling
