How to modify system $Path

 I am new to Mathematica (on Unix). I have just installed
Mathematica on my unix. How can I extend the system default 
$Path?
 
 I also has a small problem on hp fonts. When I use the
menu bar, File, the software will core dump. Anybody can help?
