Well, I dont have experience with exactly the same problem but for my stuff
 it works. So the sytax is

SetDirectory[ "Macintosh HD:subfolder 1: subfolder 2"],

so : instead of \

If you want another drive or partition, well that appears on the screen with
 a name, so I'd assume


SetDirectory[ "partition name:subfolder 1: subfolder 2"],
