Thank you all for your helpful replies. A Ms. Pitney at Wolfram
ended up suggesting something similar to Jurgen's (and Luc Barthelet's)
solution:
$PrePrint = Short[#, 7]&
This is rather like setting the $Post variable as Jurgen does. It is a
matter of taste whether one uses Short[] or Shallow[] to format the
expression.
All is well and good.
