Hi David,
try my PNGBitmap package from MathSource or
http://www.mpae.gwdg.de/~kuska/mcpng.html
it read & write Portable Network Graphics bitmaps in Gray (8,16 Bit) and
RBG(A) (24, 48 Bit).
