Is there a body of formal math that involves symbolic manipulation? For
example, can one find a textbook on symbolic manipulation? Are there
technical papers on it? To find the technical papers, what does one
search by?
I'm curious about the math behind it. For example, is there a standard
or canonical form for expressions that guarantees uniqueness, etc?
Thanks.
