Copying from Mathematica

Sometimes, when I copy from a notebook in Mathematica and paste in
notepad (Windows NT), the pasted text contains lots of  \  's.
Sometimes it doesn't. What's going on?  I have tried Edit->Copy As ,
only to get full Mathematica speak text.  I just want to copy and paste
the text "as is". 

I am trying to write a package and when I either copy the text out of
the file or I save the notebook as a package, I get lots of  \ 's.
