                       CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

Second Annual One-day Symposium in Technology for Mathematical Learning

                         Monday 29 June 1998

Organised by the METRIC Project at
                      Imperial College, London

These annual symposia are intended to provide a forum for examining the
impact of mathematical technologies on undergraduate teaching and
learning, and the focus this year is on the use of mathematical
software packages in engineering education.

In the workplace of the engineer, software packages are offering more
and more mathematical power to more and more people. But this progress
has its costs, for example in some software the actual calculations are
hidden from the user, as, more importantly, are the underlying
mathematical models. This symposium focusses on the question of how we
should be training the modern engineer mathematically for this changing
workplace.

One particular challenge is that the traditional mathematics curriculum
for undergraduate engineers has been based on a thorough grounding in
pen-and-paper mathematical methods. How should the curriculum be
revised to take advantage of mathematical software, and to ensure a
sound preparation for future engineering practice?

Our invited speakers have experience teaching mathematics and its
applications in different engineering disciplines, and have worked with
a range of software packages (including Mathcad, Maple and
spreadsheets).

The speakers will be: Rob Beale, School of Construction & Earth
Sciences, Oxford Brookes University; Dick Clements, Department of
Engineering Mathematics, University of Bristol; Warren Houghton, School
of Engineering, University of Exeter; Phillip Kent, METRIC Project,
Imperial College.

The conference fee will be approximately 25 pounds, payable on the day,
with lunch and refreshments included.
