I recently ran the Mathematica 2.2 front end on a G3 with MacOS 8.5.1, but I was
connecting to a version 3.01 kernel. It ran, but crashed occasionally.
Taking a wild guess, a 2.2 front end and a 2.2 kernel will run OK. Maybe
not. The Version 3.01 front end *does not do well with Mac OS 8.5.1 or 8.6*
and that is why I was using a 2.2 front end. Now I have version 4, it works
fine under Mac OS 8.6 and I would suppose 8.5.1 also.
