OK, I've done a little research, and the deal is that no OS 8.5 Appearance
Extension exists, since the code is incorporated into the system. Apparently
certain rogue application installers put an Appearance Extension into the
Extensions folder, which is why there was one in mine. Somehow I doubt that
having the Appearance Extension in there causes any problems, but you never
know... The bottom line is that if there is still a problem, it's with the
system itself, and the statement on Wolfram's web site is misleading at best.

I have had problems with out-of-whack type spacing on screen, similar to but not
as severe as with OS 8.1. Resizing the window or otherwise causing the text to
be re-rendered always corrects it, temporarily. With the unpatched Appearance
Extension in OS 8.1, often it was necessary to restart.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that Mac OS 8.6 and Mathematica 4.0 get all this
straightened out at last.
