Interesting ....  

Did you try the other Ticks option for ContourPlot?  FrameTicks->{...} may well 
be what you're after instead ....  

When you're trying this, consider that the Frame generally has 4 sides.  You 
can control ticks on all of these, and by default, they're Automatic.
