Can't read packages

Mathematica can't seem to read packages for me. For example, a program
contains

<<Statistics`NormalDistribution`
and
N1 = NormalDistribution[0,1]

but when I run the code I get a message like
"Mathematica has detected a possible internal error. If possible, report
the error to support at wolfram.com, quoting "Assertion 'nboxesToSend == 1'
failed at matheditio.c:1508", and describe in as much detail as possible
what you were doing when the error occurred."
