You tried to open it how? It sounds like you just double-clicked on a DOS file and expected the Finder to figure out somehow that it is a Mathematica document. Try launching Mathematica first, then choose "Open" from the File menu, and choose the document you want to open. Alternatively, you could try dragging the document on top of the Mathematica icon to open it in Mathematica. Once you have done this and successfully opened the file, you should choose "Save As..." from the File menu and save a new file as a Mathematica document.
