Ted,
Jack Crenshaw (jcrens at earthlink.net.) of Embedded Systems Magazine
(http://www.embedded.com/)is trying to finish (what seems like) a year
long series of columns on developing his own bullet proof minmizer. He
confronted many of the same issues you mentioned, like interval
subdividing strategies, Brent's method etc. You may want to take a
look at his humourous oddesy. His latest column on the subject is
online.
