Using recent versions of XFree with Mathematica can be troublesome. As 
mentionned in the Help Browser/X Configuration, use xmodmap to set your 
keyboard mapping.

Email to me directly if you want to have a look at my own .xmodmap file, but 
note it provides a french keyboard mapping.
