Mathematica crashes on startup!

I've been running Mathematica v3 on my Powerbook G3 (Mac OS 8.6) for years without any problem. Suddenly the following problem has cropped up. When I double click on a saved notebook, I get a slew of error messages with the following numbers: 208 142 208 276 - Unable to find text reseouce files along path: ... 142 276 - Unable to ... and then Mathematica quits. If I start Mathematica by double clicking directly and open the notebook, everything works fine! What might account for this odd behavior?
