Barry,
I think you are looking for the command NestList.
A function ff is defined, for example
ff[a_]:=2a
The first element is defined
In[] fir=1
Out[] 1
Then ff is applied a number of times to the first and following elements
In[] lst=NestList[ff,fir,10]
Out[] {1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024}
