Importing .mat file from matlab

mathematica claims it can import a .mat file if it is sotred in version
4 format, but the details of that are very sketchy (the help sends you
to sectionj 2.11.7 that just mentions the import command but doesn't
tell you much. In particular, what would be the exact form of the
command, and does it maintain array sizes and shapes?

Any help appreciated.

Roy Mendelssohn
