In Mathematica 4.2.1, I get a recursion error for that same thing.

Given that x with a subscript of k has InputForm Subscript[x, k], I 
would _expect_ a recursion error.  So if indeed it worked in 4.2 or 
earlier, I would regard _that_ as peculiar.
