Thanks for all the replies. I had completely forgotten about Ghostscript.
I also received a reply from a fellow at Wolfram who pointed me to the
following articles;
http://forums.wolfram.com/student-support/topics/5684
and
http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/kernel/graphics/external.html

However, I want to avoid the use of "intermediate files".
Do you or anyone in the group know if it is possible to render the
graphics in Ghostscript without making "intermediate" files, e.g via a
pipe or connection to stdout/stdin. If so how do I go about doing this?

Thanks
Yas
