Have you tried resizing the "empty" window? This should make the 
contents appear. It is a nuisance having to do it every time but I 
spent a term teaching graph theory having to do it every time (after I 
upgraded Java from 1.3 to 1.41). I contacted the author, by the way, 
and he suggested this remedy.
