Hi,

I want to run Mathematica 4.0 on a modern laptop (system description see
below).

But already when I try to start "Mathematica 4 kernel" from the windows
start menu the kernel window appears with

"Mathematica 4.0 for Microsoft Windows
Copyright 1988-1999 Wolfram Research, Inc.
Unknown mask."

and the MathKernel.exe crashes! The Front end works, but the kernel always
crashes instantly.

Has anybody any hints?

I use Microsoft Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4)
Mathematica Version Number 4.0.1.0
