Pratik: That is a very interesting suggestion, which
I was not aware of. I will try it.  Many thanks!

I thought first of using lists, as in
rep={b -> {1,-1}, x -> { 2,-2,2*I,-2*I}};
But that runs into length conformity problems, 
e.g.,  (b^2+x^4)/.rep;
