help on input problem

Hello,

Suddenly there apeared a problem with my 4.2 mathematica.
When I enter a simple expression with the pallete or the keyboard it is 
not accepted but a message apears:

Syntax::"sntxi": "Incomplete expression; more input is needed.

For example when I enter a root with the symbol.  If I write Sqrt[9-x^2] 
  it works.
