you're right, of course, and i'm well aware of the effect of such a
replacement.
however, i needed only a SIMPLIFICATION scheme to a final result,
rather than a transformation rule in forming it.

i got some very helpful advice around - and thanks for the summation
tip, it might prove handy someday too.
