And thanks to Paul Erickson, David Annetts, Jaccard Florian, and  
Yehuda, all of whom kindly responded.  It's syntax, syntax, syntax,  
and gaining an appreciation of distinctions such as that pointed out  
by Paul Erickson that some function use criteria while others use  
patterns.  It takes time.
