Hm, I learned that part (the most important in my opinion) about mathematica
from the mathematica book, available in the online help. Look at
'Principles of mathematica' -> 'Patterns' (2.3). Look also at
'Transformation Rules and Definitions' (2.5) and 'Evaluation of
Expressions' (2.6).
I don't know if there is a book that explains this better...
