Paul,

You might want to try Ted Ersek's SubscriptSymbols package on MathSource at
the Wolfram site.

Hello,
why is the following definition not possible:

f[x_{1}_]:=x_{1}

as an expression for

Cell[BoxData[
    RowBox[{
      RowBox[{"f", "[",
        RowBox[{
          SubscriptBox["x", "1"], "_"}], "]"}], ":=",
      SubscriptBox["x", "1"]}]], "Input"]

I'll simply have an indexed variable x. I'm doing it with x and then
Ctrl+_

How is this done correctly?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Paul
