I don't know whether I understand your what you want. Perhaps this...


Plot3D[f[a,b], {a, -2, 2}, {b, -2, 2},PlotRange->All];

ContourPlot[f[a,b], {a, -2, 2}, {b, -2, 2}];

Plot3D[Evaluate[f[a,b]/.{a->Log[a],b->Log[b]}], {a, -2, 2}, {b, -2, 2}];

ContourPlot[Evaluate[f[a,b]/.{a->Log[a],b->Log[b]}], {a, -2, 2}, {b, -2, 2}];
