$PathnameSeparator and DirectoryName

Why is it that reading in a list of Unix file path strings, Blocking
$PathnameSeparator = "/" and (underneath the Block) using
DirectoryName on the paths doesn't work on Windows' Mathematica? It
just returns empty strings.
