don't give up that fast, I think it is just a few minor steps further in 
understanding pattern matching from where you stand at the moment..

It was just a dummy symbol to illustrate what the matches are, not a
very successful idea, obviously :-)

maybe you want to have a look at Carl Woll=C2=B4s solution, which achieves to
work around the mentioned pitfalls in a much more elegant way, which I
didn't know would work. So at least I did learn something from this
thread, thanks to you :-)
