mathematica 6 frontend and linux

I cannot start Mathematica frontend in version 6 on my 32 bit Gentoo

Linux laptop. Starting Mathematica 6.0 from the command line does not

give me error messages, though. It just dies. Running the 6.0 kernel

alone from the command line works. (Version 5.2 runs nicely, including

frontend, however.) Is anybody experiencing similar problems with 6.0?
