Undoubtedly they can. For example, I remember when I discovered \[InvisibleTimes] in Mathematica 4.1 and \[LongEqual] in Mathematica 5.0. It was great! In Mathematica 6 they introduced ImplicitPlus. Great again! Like you, I´m always looking for typesetting enhacements. 

And I am still eagerly awaiting the day when WRI will supply us with a true PERCENT sign (%). As I said elsewhere, I now use
