I want to thank everyone for their replies. It looks like this is a problem with Windows (I received one confirmation) and not with Mac. For those with Windows, evaluate the following statement for a demonstration: Manipulate[ Style[a | b, n, Magnification -> m], {n, Range[8, 30]}, {{m, 1}, {.5, .75, 1.0, 1.25, 1.50}}] The following font sizes give a bad 'Alternatives vertical bar'. m = 0.50: 8,9,10,13,14,19,20,25,26 m = 0.75: 9,13,17 m = 1.00: 10,13 m = 1.25: 8,10 m = 1.50: None This problem only occurs in Input/Output cells - not in text. On my Windows Vista system this now displays as a very short vertical bar, about the size of a quote, in the notebook, although it works properly and displays properly in the underlying expression. It still displays properly in Version 6. David Park djmpark at comcast.net <http://home.comcast.net/~djmpark> http://home.comcast.net/~djmpark/
