no StateData[] ?

Hello MathGroup:

Is this the only way to get the state population?

Plus @@ (CityData[#, "Population"] & /@ CityData[{All,
"NorthCarolina", "UnitedStates"}])

I could not find a "direct API", so it seems I need to run this for
all 50 states.
