problems with Eigenvalues[] and Eigensystems[] on windows xp x64

I ran into a strange problems on a 64bit windows desktop with
mathematica v7:

Eigenvalues/Eigensystem gives wrong results when used on matrices
256by256 or larger.

This shows up both if the eigevectors are used to check eigevalues
AND, even more strangely, if I simply use Eigenvalues repeatedly on
the same matrix I get different results every time!!!

I have checked this notebook on a 32bit v7 and it works fine.

Any thoughts how to fix this issue?
