I am also using Ubuntu and Mathematica 7.0.  I have the same problem,
but I hadn't associated it with Manipulate since, invariably, I have
at least one Manipulate command in all my notebooks.  I also get a
premature quit when exporting to .eps for the first time (this happens
sometimes), or when using "print selection" (every time).  I will have
to try these operations without Manipulate in the notebook.
