UI Hangs

Hi all,
I seem to hang my Mathematica 7 UI frequently with very large symbolic
output. For example, using some large matrix, I may mistakenly use a
non-integer index (oops). The nonsensical value propagates as a
symbol, until it comes flying out into the UI as some very complex
thing, where a half-rendered "Notebook Progress -- Formatting Notebook
contents" messages hangs for a very long time. Are there settings in
the UI to prevent this kind of thing, or a way to cleanly cancel long
UI jobs? With long jobs in the kernel, if Kernel->Abort Evaluation
doesn't respond, I can simply kill the kernel process, but this kind
of recovery doesn't seem possible in the UI (if just for fear of
corrupting my notebook).
TIA
