Steve,
In changing from Mathematica 7 to Mathematica 8, I had to change

SetDirectory[StringJoin[$UserDocumentsDirectory, "\em\em-6.0"]]

to

SetDirectory[StringJoin[$UserDocumentsDirectory, "/em/em-6.0"]]

(forward slashes instead of back slashes). The back slashes seemed to 
run ok except they caused error messages "Unknown string escape /e" that 
appeared when I clicked on "Show Messages / Retry".
