There should be a problem with the linux distribution... It can depend
if you use KDE or GNOME environment as well. Mathematica can work on
Kubuntu without any problem; Ubuntu is simplier as its purpose is
different from Kubuntu. However, I have never installed neither Ubuntu
nor Kubuntu without problems (even from ISO image). Some drivers or
other stuff was always missing or installed improperly, and not all
devices worked even if the driver was installed...
