Can you send me one of the notebooks that's causing a crash? I could perhaps give you better advice when I know the nature of the problem you're seeing. If you want to try to experiment with older versions of Mathematica, then I can say that if the notebooks were ever converted successfully by any version of Mathematica, then the crash you're seeing would have been most likely to be introduced between 5.2 and 6.0.
