The back conversion to 2.2 is broken in 3.0.  It is fixed in 3.0.1.  If
you simplify your 3.0 notebooks and remove all graphics and fancy
characters and cell grouping, then the conversion routine will convert
the text back to 2.2 format.  Not very satisfying, I know. --
