Perhaps a fresh installation of mathematica would help if your Win 98 was an upgrade rather than a fresh system. In my past experience with microsoft, I have found that the "upgrade" versions of their operating systems cause problems with many of my programs while wiping the disk and starting over has a much higher rate of success.
