I recall that this is possible using Dynamic Visualizer.

I had a look at your applet and was most impressed!

Dynamic Visualizer can zoom in an out as you can but can also change the
lighting and also is kinetic (you can start the graphic spinning giving
it a "kick" with the mouse which did not seem to work with your
applet).
