Hi Greg > > Has anyone seen a situation on NT4/98 installations of v.3.0 where typed > characters are translated incorrectly? > > (9) become H9L etc. > > Does anyone know what causes it? It's caused by Mathematica trying to substitute characters from the Math fonts it prefers to whatever character set you're using. It happens in 4.0 too. There are a number of fixes, most of which are in Archives to this newsgroup and on WRI's site. The first is to simply accept it, then edit the text in the graphic so that it's right. The second is to save the graphic as an EPS from the menu. Then, you can print it properly using GhostView when GhostView is told where to find your Mathematica Type 1 fonts. Alternatively, if you have 4.0, you can use the wonderful utility on MathSource called "emmathfnt" to embed Type 1 fonts in your file. While embedding fonts increases file sizes, it allows them to be printed with proper substitutions. IMHO, the second fix is far easier than the first -- it depends on what you want to do.
